History of the town of Chartres
Situated in the department of Eure-et-Loir and the Centre Region, Chartres is a town in France. Formerly, the area was known as the Carntum, Carnotas. Indeed, in the second century BCE, Chartres was the capital of the Gallic tribe of Carnutes. Nestled in Gaul, the city was the meeting place of the Druids. The third century, the town was evangelized by St. Altin and St. Eodald. At the end of the fourth century, the city became one of the largest dioceses in Gaul. In 1588, the city served as a refuge for Henry III. Shortly after, the city suffered the onslaught of Henry of Navarre the future Henry IV.
