History of Deauville
Since Normandy was occupied by the Viking in the 9th century, Deauville was called Auevilla in 1060.After Deauville and its marshes have left few traces in history before the creation of the seaside resort. The village called first "Dosville" was built on the height of Mount Canisy. In the nineteenth century, there were ten farms, twenty-six houses, and a hundred people who lived on agriculture and livestock.
Arose of the will of the Duke of Morny who was half-brother of Napoleon III in 1858, Deauville became the new seaside resort. He exploited this shoreline of sand and swamps to create the city. To do this, he has partnered with various renowned men including the Parisian architect Mr Breney. He and his associates bought the marshes from the commune for 800,000 gold francs in 1860. And four years later, "Deauville came out of the sand." The involvement of the half-brother of Napoleon III will suffice to give life to the pharaonic project of Joseph François Olliffe. The Duke of Morny had a racetrack built in 1862. The city became very attractive to such an extent that a rail link Paris-Deauville was created in 1863. At his death in 1865, the market of real estate collapsed.
Deauville remained standing at the passage of the nineteenth to the twentieth century. The town renamed rue de Normandie in Dr. Olliffe street in tribute to the pioneer of the city. In 1911, Désiré Le Hoc, Mayor of Deauville, revived the activities. In previous years, he built the Normandy Hotel, the Casino and the Royal Hotel. These buildings played important roles during the First World War. After this war, the Plage Fleurie will live its best years and regain its reputation as a city of pleasure.
Infrastructures have been erected everywhere, such as the racetracks of Deauville-Clairefontaine, the hotel du Golf, the international airport of Deauville-Saint Gatien. The works were interrupted during World War II because the Germans occupied the city.
