History and visit of Rue Ave Maria in Paris
Situated in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, Rue de l’Ave Maria connects Rue du Fauconnier to Rue Saint-Paul. Originally, this street was known as “rue des Barres,” named after the Carmelite religious community who first settled in the vicinity. These Carmelites wore mantles with white and black stripes, leading locals to call them ‘barred.’ In the mid-13th century, King Louis IX granted the convent to the nuns of the Beguines community. These Beguines were later replaced by Girls-de-Sainte-Claire during the reign of King Louis XI. Known for his devotion to the Blessed Virgin, Louis XI renamed the monastery Ave Maria, and consequently, the street took its name around 1867. The street, part of the Saint-Gervais neighborhood, starts at No. 3 St. Paul Street and ends at No. 4 Street Fauconnier. With a length of 116 meters and a width of 15 meters, Rue de l’Ave Maria has existed since the 16th century. Though detailed historical documents are scarce, it is known that the tomb of Mathieu Molé, a prominent historical figure, was located in the Ave Maria convent. Today, the street boasts modern buildings alongside preserved historical structures like the Hotel de Sens.
