Arromanches to trace the history of France

Arromanches is a town of Calvados in the Normandy region. This seaside resort of 1.37 km² is famous for being one of the landing places during the Second World War. Her fame earned her for hosting the artificial bridge that was used to transport weapons and equipment of the Allied forces. The vehicles, the men and the supplies have all been there.

The port and its history

The port was built using huge caissons of reinforced concrete, called Phoenix caisson. Added to these caissons built in England, there are also floating pontoons and old boats voluntarily sunk. The port was put into service on June 14, 1944. With the prefabricated port, called Muberry, 9,000 to 22,000 tons of equipment per day could be transported, which made it possible to dispense with the conquest of the ports in deep water, such as those of Cherbourg and Le Havre, well guarded by the German army. A total of 2.5 million men, 4 million tons of equipment and 500,000 vehicles were landed.

The other side of Arromanches

Before this historic epic, Arromanches was already a very popular holiday resort. Its natural landscape marked by its cliffs is a quiet shelter for the small town. Currently, it houses the Landing Museum which allows you to rediscover history and marvel at the technical prowess and supernatural efforts made for the liberation of France. There is also the Arromanches 360, a circular cinema consisting of 9 screens 360 °. This circular cinema distributes films and documentaries retracing the Battle of Normandy.

Apart from visiting the historic sites, Arromanches-les-Bains also offers you an extraordinary panorama for a hike along the beach. Visiting its localities allows you to discover Calvados and its famous tourist attractions, its cuisine, its local products and its culture. With our shuttle services, know that you can enjoy and make so many historical tours.
