History of Beaune and its surroundings
Derived from the Latinized Gallic name of "Belena", the source at the origin of the village. Beaune refers to Belenos, the Gallic god of living waters. The name Beaune was encountered in the Merovingian period (481-751).
Located in the Côte-d'Or region and the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, Beaune is 45 kilometers south of Dijon, 150 kilometers far from Lyon. It is the second most inhabited municipality. It is also the 8th city of Burgundy, its heritage is rich in terms of Romanesque and neo-Gothic architecture.
Beaune is home to one of the first French monuments inscribed on Unesco's World Heritage List: Fontenay Abbey. Following the departure of the monks at the time of the French Revolution, the church was restored by the Aynard family, descendants of the Montgolfière brothers who occupied the premises. The town is distinguished from the 15th century, thanks to the Hotel-Dieu of Nicolas Rolin. Also known as Hospice de Beaune, this area served as a reception center for the most deprived.

Beaune International Film Festival
