Roland-Garros is a tennis stadium located in the district of Auteuil in Paris which was an old commune in the west of Paris. The site regroups 4 courts in clay and welcomes the international tennis players of France, every year at the same time. Initially with 10,258 seats, the Roland-Garros stadium now has 14,845 seats available. The internationals of France took place at the beginning in a wooden stadium, notably during the winter 1927-1928. To remedy this, it was decided to build a new sports complex.

The new stadium was built on the grounds belonging to the former commune of Auteuil, but conceded at the Jean-Bouin stadium whose lease ended. To obtain a lease to build a new stadium in the next nine months, the two club presidents pawned a part of their respective assets. To honor the memory of French soldiers who died during the First World War, the stadium will bear the name of Roland-Garros (1888-1918), a hero of French aviation who has disappeared during the war. This French tennis player was also a comrade of Emile Lesieur. The latter – a French international rugby player – and Mr. Roland Garros shared the passion for sport.

The sports complex will be inaugurated in May 1928. And then, on 18th and 19th of May of the same year, Roland-Garros hosts the matches of the French and British women's teams of first international French. The first game opposed the French Sylvia Lafaurie and the English Eileen Bennet. This match saw the victory of the English player.

Subsequently, renovations will be undertaken to improve access to the site. The sports complex is equipped with 23 courts, the best known of which are the Suzanne Lenglen (9959 seats) and the Philippe Chatrier. This court is named in honor of the French President of the International Tennis Federation. A new stadium project with a total capacity of 15,000 places is already underway, this new stadium should be fitted out next to the current complex.
