What is the story behind the airport serving 315 cities worldwide?
A saturated situation being announced at Orly and Le Bourget airports, the construction of a new airport was necessary in 1962. The magnitude of the phenomenon led the government to try to stop the polemics by clearly stopping the airport nuisances in three zones by March 1972. Paris CDG received the approval of the public utility authority in the late 1960s. Most expropriations took place in 1972, the rumour of the project and the vagueness of information making the local and departmental contestation grow.
The municipality of Roissy-en-France and the other villages pitted a fierce resistance with the persons in charge, which will harm the construction site. The arrival of the construction machinery and the major damage caused to the streets of the village of Roissy are among the bases of this resistance. According to an inter-ministerial decree issued on June 16th, 1964, Paris Nord airport was to be created on an agricultural zone in the Pays de France, twenty-five kilometres north-east of Paris, in the Roissy region of France.
The construction ran up against a refusal to grant the building permit, which lasted for a good ten years. The new airport would finally be inaugurated on March 8th, 1974. After ten years of works, Prime Minister Pierre Messmer gets to attend this inauguration.
The first passengers embarked at Charles de Gaulle airport on 14 March 1974. At the time, the traffic changes saw a doubling of traffic every five years, twelve million passengers at the end of 1975-1980.
On July 25th 2000, the flight 4590 Air France of supersonic Concorde took fire on take-off and crashed shortly after on a hotel in the commune of Gonesse and made 113 victims. A memorial in honour of this tragedy would be inaugurated by the CEO of Air France, 6 years later, that is to say on 25th of July 2006 to the south of the airport, near the freight area.
Charles de Gaulle airport is responsible for a large proportion of connecting flights in Europe, second only to London Heathrow International Airport. Charles de Gaulle airport is also one of the most important airports in the world. More than 315 cities are served worldwide from this airport.
