History of Vaux-le-Vicomte, the castle and its grounds Built in the seventeenth century by Louis Le Vau for the superintendent of finances Nicolas Fouquet, Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is surrounded by one of the most beautiful French gardens.
History of the castle The chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte was built from 1655 to 1658 for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's superintendent of finances. Fouquet was surrounded by the best artists of the time: Louis Le Vau, architect Charles Le Brun, painter and André Le Nôtre, gardener. Nicolas Fouquet is a son of a master of requests. His meteoric rise is because in 1650 he became attorney general in the Parliament of Paris and in 1963, Superintendent of Finance. Two weeks a grand celebration was held at Vaux in honor of Louis XIV, on 17 August 166. He was imprisoned for life. The king accuses him of misappropriation million, armament of warships and fortifications at Belle-Isle, which is Duke. On the death of his son, the castle was sold to Marshal Villars. In 1764 Caesar Choiseul-Praslin, Praslin Vaux-Duke acquired the estate. In 1875, Alfred Sommier, wealthy businessman and art lover, bought the castle. The progeny of Mattress inherited the castle, including the Count Patrice de Vogue. The castle has a central body and three-body front side of the court and a rotunda in the center piece of the facade, the side gardens. The large central living room, with two floors (Italian) has an oval shape. What is unique in France. The interior decor is sumptuous with the works of the painter Charles Le Brun.
The French garden The architect Louis Le Vau and gardener André Le Nôtre are the first to achieve a perfect relationship between architecture and landscaped environment from the seventeenth century. The garden is built around a perspective of over three kilometers with a vast space punctuated by a series of terraces. Le Nôtre disposed of boxwood foliage imitating Turkish carpets, groves, lawns, dormant or gushing water, management of plantations. It is a new garden design that reflects the order, rigor and the nobility of the Grand Siècle. From the entrance gate to the statue of Hercules, the park stretches over 1,500 meters long with a width six times less. A huge green covers the park around the castle. This impression position "ruling" over a wide area symbolizes the ascent of the occupant. With wonderful laws of perspective and optics, the garden gives the impression of being entirely embraced at first glance. It is an illusion effect intended by Le Nôtre. The caves, high on the edge of the square basin seem to move away when the approach when a light ribbon with a large canal suddenly emerges from a previously invisible side valley. The caves are actually built on the other side of this unexpected valley. Other surprises, made of shadow and sun await walkers in this huge leafy park.
