Arromanches: A Journey Through France's History

Arromanches is a small town in the Calvados department of the Normandy region. This seaside resort, spanning 1.37 km², is renowned as one of the Allied landing sites during the Second World War. Its fame largely stems from its role as the site of an artificial harbor used for transporting weapons and supplies for the Allied forces. Vehicles, troops, and supplies all passed through here.

The Harbor and Its History

The harbor was constructed using enormous reinforced concrete caissons, known as Phoenix caissons. In addition to these caissons, which were built in England, the harbor also incorporated floating pontoons and intentionally sunk ships. The harbor was commissioned on June 14, 1944. With the prefabricated harbor, known as Mulberry, it was possible to transport between 9,000 and 22,000 tons of equipment daily. This effectively bypassed the need to capture deep water ports, such as those at Cherbourg and Le Havre, which were heavily defended by the German army. In total, 2.5 million men, 4 million tons of equipment, and 500,000 vehicles were landed here.

DDay Aviators is a beautiful B & B housed in a small mansion located 50 meters from Winston Churchill Harbor. Aviation enthusiasts, the owners of the place dedicated the D-Day Aviators to Allied airmen who contributed to the success of the landing. The DDay Aviators offers beautifully decorated rooms, providing an ideal haven for those visiting the remains left by the war. The site houses photos and collections of original aeronautical pieces from the Second World War.

Bedrooms

DDay Aviators offers 4 rooms for 2 people each, ranging from 13 to 20 m². Each room is equipped with free Wi-Fi, a double bed, TV with satellite channels, minibar and wardrobe. The bedroom also has an en suite bathroom and a private toilet equipped with towels, hairdryer and free toiletries. The kitchen area is equipped with kettle, coffee maker, hob and microwave. The property also has a communal living room. The floor of the rooms is wooden parquet. You will be able to enjoy, even for a limited time, period furniture such as chairs and sofa. These furniture are a seating area and are also added to the exceptional decor of each room. The four bedrooms are divided into 13 m², 14 m² and 20 m². Services Children are welcome at DDay Aviators, however the number of children allowed is one per room. This limited number is mainly due to the fact that there is no room for extra beds in the rooms. Pets are also allowed and no extra charge. Housekeeping is available daily.
