Creil is a French town located in the department of Oise, in Hauts-de-France. It holds the distinction of being the third-largest city in the Oise department and is situated in the heart of the second agglomeration of the Picardie region. Creil is approximately 62 km away from Paris.

A Rich History

The history of Creil can be traced back to ancient times, with its origins dating back to the Neolithic era. Archaeologists believe that Creil was once a fortified settlement or oppidum during the Gaulish period. The city's first recorded mention was in the year 633 when it was referred to as "Criolo." Over the centuries, its name evolved, becoming "Criolum" in 672, "Credilium" in 851, and "Credulii" in 1115.

Medieval Development and Industrial Growth

Creil flourished during the Middle Ages with the establishment of a chapter of canons and the construction of a relic housing site. The twelfth century saw the creation of the Hôtel-Dieu, while the thirteenth century witnessed the construction of the Saint-Médard church, which underwent several transformations until the sixteenth century. However, Creil faced challenges during the Black Death in 1348 and experienced famine, forcing inhabitants to resort to eating tree bark.

The city endured significant damage during the Hundred Years War and both World Wars. Much of Creil was devastated and had to be rebuilt starting from 1950. In 1797, the industrial sector saw growth with the establishment of a crystal company, later converted into an earthenware factory. Unfortunately, a fire led to its closure in 1895.

Recovery and Population Growth

After the World Wars, Creil underwent a period of recovery and diversification of its economy, which led to gradual population growth. Over time, the city has rebounded from the losses suffered during the wars. Today, Creil and other towns in the Oise department are considered sources of population growth in the Picardy region.
