History and visit the Rue de la Chapelle in Paris
Rue de La Chapelle is a significant Parisian way located in the 18th arrondissement. Spanning 890 meters in length and varying from 23.5 to 65 meters in width, its name is derived from the northern part of the district, linking Place de la Chapelle to Boulevard Ney. A Roman road once traversed this location, connecting Lutetia to northern cities, evolving into the current Rue Saint-Denis, Rue Faubourg-Saint-Denis, and Rue Marx Dormoy, meeting at Roundabout La Chapelle. This path later became part of the historical axis of Paris to Saint-Denis, known as the ESTREE. The street has undergone several name changes, from the road from Paris to Calais, Royal Road No. 1, and main street of La Chapelle, to Franciade Chapel Street during the Revolution, and Rue du Faubourg Glory in 1814. Since 1945, its southern part has been named Rue Marx Dormoy.
Notable landmarks include the Church of Saint-Denis de la Chapelle between No. 16 and No. 18, originally a chapel named Chapelle Sainte-Genevieve, housing relics from the 13th century. It survived two fires in 1358 and 1418, followed by expansions in 1895, 1898, and 1906.
