History and visit of the Saint-Antoine gate in Paris
The door Saint-Antoine was beaten under the reign of Henri III in 1585 and no longer exists today, it was one of the doors of the enclosure Charles V. There were two doors which bore the name of door of Saint -Antoine, the best known was watched by the Bastille, in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris on one of the oldest routes in the city dating from the time of the Romans. It had only one central arch, but when Louis XIV ascended the throne, he ordered the architect Blondel to remedy it by adding a second arch that would balance perfectly with the one that was already present. In 1356, six gates were designed to control access to the capital. One of them was that of Saint-Antoine, protected by two towers. In 1382, the king left his residence in the city palace to flee to his hotels in the Marais and asked to build a Chastel, to be safe in his home. A triumphal arch with a single arch was built under the orders of Henry II just outside the door of Saint Anthony. Sculptures decorated the skylights of the arch. In 1672, two arcades were added to pay homage to Louis XIV in memory of his marriage in 1660 which passed through this door. Three statues were specially sculpted for this occasion. Several important events happened at the Porte de Saint-Antoine, for example Henri II participating in a tournament on June 30, 1559 where he was struck with a fatal wound.
