History and visit the rue de Bassano in Paris
The Rue de Bassano, situated in the 8th arrondissement, traverses both the Chaillot and the renowned Champs-Élysées districts. Originating at 58, avenue d’Iéna, it concludes at 101 Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Established in 1777, it was initially dubbed the “promenade de Chaillot” and later “rue du Château des Fleurs”. In 1881, it was renamed as a homage to Hugues Bernard Maret, Duke of Bassano, a prominent French diplomat, politician, and member of the French Academy and the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.
A segment of Rue de Bassano was already in existence by 1730, known as the “Lane Gardens”. Another section, nestled between the Champs Elysée and rue Vernet, bordered the promenade de Chaillot and was christened “rue du Château des Fleurs” due to its proximity to the castle of the same name. The street underwent several expansions, resulting in the demolition of the castle.
Historically, Rue de Bassano boasted two grand hotels: Cahen d’Anvers and Hotel Miss-Teixeira Leite. The Cahen d’Anvers, constructed in 1880 by Gabriel Hippolyte, was commissioned by Count Louis Cahen d’Anvers and Countess Louise Morpurgo. Eventually, it was alienated from the family and served as an annex to the Parisian Drancy. The ground floor facade of the Hotel Miss-Teixeira Leite endures in Rue de Bassano, although overshadowed by a five-story contemporary building.
