History and visit the street from Le Havre to Paris
The rue du Havre, spanning the 8th and 9th arrondissements of Paris, traverses the district of La Madeleine and the neighborhood of Europe. Beginning at the Boulevard Haussmann and terminating at the Place du Havre, this street has been in existence since 1841 and extends over a length of 134 meters.
Characterized by a division where even numbers are found in the 9th arrondissement and odd numbers in the 8th, the rue du Havre was constructed to facilitate traffic flow at the entrances to the Rouen, Versailles, and St. Germain railways. Its name derives from the fact that trains from this street led to the port of Le Havre. A segment of rue du Havre, stretching between Boulevard Haussmann and Rue de Provence, was formerly part of what is now called rue Vignon. The opening of the part of the street between Saint-Lazare and Rue de Provence followed a royal decree in 1843.
A notable building on rue du Havre is the Lycée Condorcet, housed in what was once a Capuchin monastery of St. Louis d’Antin, designed by architect Alexandre Théodore Brongniart. This street has also gained recognition through the novel by Paul Guimard.
