The Montparnasse is an area belonging to the 14th district of the French capital. It is the 53rd administrative district of the city of Paris. It covers an area of 1,126 square kilometers. It had about 18,500 inhabitants in 1999. It is placed at the intersection of Boulevard Raspail and Boulevard Montparnasse. The name of this area was given by students in reference to Mount Parnassus was the home of the Muses of Greek myth.
Boulevard Montparnasse was plotted on a hill in the 18th century.
