In the 13th century, rue Herold was the name of the street of the old Augustins. She had an extension called street Argout. During the reign of Louis IX, the Augustinians who came to Italy possessed a monastery in the year 1285. Later, they settled on the part of the Seine. Street took the name of the extension in 1867.
It was in 1881 that the street bore the name of the composer Louis Joseph Ferdinand Herold. He was born rue Herold. The house was born the melody has a plaque in his memory. He is buried in the cemetery of Père-Lachaise.
