History and visit Saint-Bernard gate in Paris
The Porte Saint-Bernard does not exist today, but has been replaced by the restaurant La Tour d’Argent. It was one of the doors to Philippe Auguste’s enclosure. Along the left bank of the Seine, in the Saint-Victor district of the 5th arrondissement. It was so named because of its proximity to the École des Bernardins. The rampart had been opened in the 15th century with a door named after Bernard of Clairvaux. She passed on an old path which had become a place of leisure where the monarch took his son for a walk. Henri IV decided in 1606 to have it rebuilt and transform it into a sort of quadrilateral house. In 1674, to thank Louis XIV for removing taxes, a triumphal arch was erected in his honor. The fortifications were demolished and the architect Blondel built a new gate there which was the twin of those of Saint-Denis and Saint-Martin. Seeing that the upper part of the building was inhabited, the architect inserted two low twin arches and inlaid the foundations of the arch with bas-reliefs representing the Sun King covering the city of Paris in abundance. On the other side, dressed like the ancient Greek gods, he drives the Parisian gondola flanked by nymphs and newts. It was during the reign of Charles VII that the northern flank of the tower of Saint Bernard was pierced to install a fortified door called Porte de Saint Bernard. The monument survives until 1787 when it was again destroyed.
