History and tour of the Paris Metro
The Paris Metro is an integral part of the public transport system connecting the capital and its surrounding areas. Operated by the Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), the Metro’s infrastructure, including its stations, is owned by RATP, while the rolling stock is owned by STIF. Its network spans 219.9 kilometers, featuring 16 lines and 303 subway stations, most of which are underground. In 2011, it recorded 1.506 billion passengers, averaging around 4.13 million passengers daily. The Paris Metro is a symbol of the French capital, known for its dense network and distinctive architectural style.
Constructed during the Universal Exhibition of 1900, the Paris Metro initially connected Porte de Vincennes and Porte Maillot from July 19, 1900. Designed by architect Hector Guimard in the Art Nouveau style, its construction utilized various techniques including the cut-and-cover method, shield tunneling, and traditional woodwork. Parisians quickly embraced this new mode of transportation for its comfort and efficiency. Following the inauguration of the first metro line, the network expanded rapidly until World War II. Construction slowed between 1950 and 1970. In 1929, extensions were carried out towards the suburbs, responding to population growth. Some stations were closed in 1939 to economize, but expansion efforts resumed in 1949.
In 1942, the public transport company of the Paris region merged with the CMP of Baron Empain. RATP took over network management in 1949. In 2011, significant modernization of the rolling stock occurred, including the introduction of automatic trains for more efficient operation and control. This increased line capacity and reduced travel time. Compared to the Berlin subway, the Paris Metro is more extensive, covering a length of 219.9 kilometers, with 199.9 kilometers underground. Unlike the New York subway, it does not operate throughout the night. The Metro tunnels are close to the Earth’s surface, adapting to the heterogeneous nature of Parisian soil.
The first metro line, connecting La Défense and Château de Vincennes, commenced operations in 1900, while the most recent, linking Saint-Lazare and Olympiades, was inaugurated in 1998. The Metro runs on two-track lines, except for lines 7 and 13 which have branch lines. Various methods are available for purchasing tickets, including Transilien vending machines, Ile-de-France station ticket offices, CIC bank and Credit Mutuel ATMs, Transilien agencies, and online platforms.
