The museum’s collection expanded significantly through acquisitions of private collections, such as those from Guettard. In 1957, Claude Guillemin undertook a five-year reorganization of the collections.

The museum houses 80,000 minerals of 700 different types, 4,000 minerals, 15,000 rocks, 400 meteorites, 700 gems, and 300 artificial minerals. It also includes 3,500 thin sections of rocks, 500 optical preparations, and 3,500 polished sections of various minerals.
