History of the town of Saint-Lô in Normandy
Saint-Lô is a French commune located in the department of Manche and the Lower Normandy region. Formerly, the Gallo-Roman times, the city was Briovère or Briovera meaning the bridge over the Vire Celtic. The town was invaded by the Romans after its occupation by the Gallic clan Unelles Cotentin. Thereafter, in the third century, the city became the scene of various Saxon invasions. In 889, the town was besieged by the Vikings. The village was then razed. It is only from the eleventh century the town experienced a strong economic development. In the thirteenth and fourteenth century, the city was the third of the rich duchy of Normandy.
