History and visit of Guénégaud Street in Paris
Guénégaud Street is situated in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, within the Mint neighborhood. It stretches from No. 5 Quai de Conti to No. 15 Rue Mazarine. The street has a length of 190 meters and a width of 10 meters. Historically, its construction began between 1641 and 1664 on the former site of the Hotel de Nevers, which was sold that year to Henri du Plessis-Guénégaud (1609-1676), a secretary of state under King Louis XIV. He constructed the Hotel Guénégaud, after which the street is named. At No. 2, visitors can admire the entrance to the Paris Mint, an 18th-century masterpiece by architect Jacques Denis Antoine (1733-1801). Guénégaud Street continues to house the Paris Mint and the Paris Mint Museum. Remnants of the walls of Philippe Auguste can still be found today at No. 22-27. The street is also associated with notable people such as M. Blégny, the king’s physician, who resided at No. 12 and was renowned for verifying new discoveries in medicine. The eminent Condorcet occupied five or six rooms on the mezzanine level of the Hotel de la Monnaie. M.P. Camus, a former lawyer and archivist of the Republic, also resided on this street, specifically at No. 9 and 17.
