History and visit of Rue Fürstenberg in Paris
Rue Fürstenberg is situated in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. Constructed in the late 17th century, it was named to honor the abbot of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the distinguished Cardinal Fürstenberg. In 1806, its name was changed to Rue Wertingen to commemorate a fierce battle between the Austrians and the French. By around 1815, it reverted to its original name. The street name is spelled with the German ü, contradicting the usual French rule to omit the initial particle “de” when naming a street after a cardinal. Rue Fürstenberg starts at No. 3 Rue Jacob and ends at No. 4 Rue de l’Abbaye. It stretches 82 meters in length and 7.8 meters in width. As of the early 2000s, Rue Fürstenberg has been known for commanding the highest price per m2 due to the limited number of properties available. The residences here have become rare gems. The street has long been associated with exorbitant real estate prices and notable residents. For instance, between the world wars, it housed the sacred art workshops founded by George Desvallières and Maurice Denis. Many artists had their studios at No. 6, including Eugène Delacroix. Notably, the painting “Frédéric Bazille’s Studio” depicts Rue Fürstenberg. The Musée National Eugène Delacroix is currently situated at the same address.
