History and Activities in Thiais
The name of the city, Thiais, derives from the Latin forms Theodaxium or Theodasium. These names can be traced back to a historical figure named Theodas who owned land in the fifth century. The origins of Thiais go far back in history, particularly influenced by the Gallo-Roman period. According to archaeological findings, the area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The initial settlement took shape in the Merovingian period. During the reign of Charlemagne, the city was under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A church existed in the town at that time. However, the church was destroyed during the tumultuous period of the Hundred Years’ War but was subsequently restored. During the time leading up to the French Revolution, Thiais was a bustling village, home to farmers, winemakers, artisans, and shopkeepers. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870 inflicted another round of destruction, and only in the twentieth century did the city start to develop significantly, primarily through the establishment of industrial zones.
