History and visit to Lake Daumesnil in Paris
Looking for a natural setting in Paris? Head to the 12th arrondissement to discover Lake Daumesnil, nestled in the southwest part of the Bois de Vincennes. The banks of this artificial lake invite you to take a walk, and it is even possible to sail on boats. This oasis of tranquility blends harmoniously with neighboring sites, including the Vincennes Pagoda and the Kagyu-Dzong Buddhist temple. Located near the Ceinture du Bois de Vincennes road, access to the lake is easy from the Porte Dorée metro station. The public can enjoy this haven of peace every year, from April 15 to November 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., including public holidays.
The genesis of Lake Daumesnil dates back to 1864, under the aegis of Baron Pierre Daumesnil. Initially supplied by the Marne and Lake Gravelle until 1974, its source of supply now comes from the Seine, thanks to the Pont d’Austerlitz factory. When Paris expanded by annexing the Charenton park, the Bois de Vincennes, already popular for its walks under the leadership of Napoleon III, was enriched. To attract more visitors, an artificial lake was created on the former territory of the Charenton park, extending over 12 hectares with 800 meters long and 250 meters wide. Two suspension bridges, a cave, and a waterfall, designed by the artist Hubert Robert, add to the magic of the place.
The 1931 Colonial Exhibition marked a major turning point for the lake, with Madagascar canoes as the star attraction. Pavilions displaying the wonders of the colonies surrounded the lake. Canoes, introduced in 1904, remain popular for exploring the lake and its two charming islands: Île de Reuilly and Île de Bercy. The larger island of Reuilly hosts a romantic rotunda by Gabriel Davioud, and is a favorite observation point for ornithologists. The island of Bercy is home to splendid plants, including a historic common plane tree dating from 1860.
Lake Daumesnil is a popular place for many outdoor activities. Joggers and cyclists meet there on weekends, while pony rides delight children. Picnics and the recent proposal for a swimming area testify to its constant attractiveness.
