Historically, the street was formed from the ancient streets of the Old Tuilerie, Petit-Vaugirard and Cherchemidi. It enjoys its current name in 1832, which was probably a sign representing a sundial. The street has had several names throughout history: Chemin de Vaugirard in 1388, Chemin de la Croix de Vaugirard in 1447, Chemin de la Tuilerie in 1510, Chemin de la Vieille-Tuilerie or chemin de la Pointe in 1529 .
Yet it must be remembered that between 1853 and 1964, the street housed a military prison who happened at that time in front of the Hotel Council of War. We still remember that November 11, 1940 showed an incarcerated college students who resisted the occupation. We do not forget either that Lieutenant Commander d'Estienne d'Orves-hero of Free France was imprisoned in 1941 before being shot.
The street is lined with houses that retain vestiges of history. At No. 95 is the hotel Chambon which was bought in 1994 by Gérard Depardieu enjoying a Russian citizen today. To No. 88 to 92 and 93 to 97, rue de Sèvres, there is a chapel of the mother house of the Congregation of the Mission.
