History and visit the Rue Saint-Lazare in Paris
Rue Saint-Lazare, situated in the 8th and 9th arrondissements of Paris, spans the area of Chaussee d’Antin and the area of Europe. It starts from 9 rue Bourdaloue and 1 rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette and extends to Place Gabriel Peri and Rue de Rome, measuring 1066 meters in length and 11-36 meters in width.
Founded in the seventeenth century, Rue Saint-Lazare was originally known as Pocherons and rue d’Argenteuil until 1770. It served as a connection between the City of Bishop and the village of Roule Pocherons. Its current name, attributed because it led to the Saint-Lazare house designed for leprosy patients, was adopted in 1770. In 1793, the house was transformed into a prison.
The street’s dimensions were officially established by a ministerial decree in 1797. Initially, the street’s width was set at a minimum of 10 meters, but in 1843, it was expanded to 20 meters to accommodate public needs. The construction of the renowned Saint-Lazare station occurred in 1837, and the impasse Bony, used for luggage unloading, was established in 1826. Notable buildings, adorned in the French sixteenth-century style, such as the Delaroche Hotel (1829), the Hotel Concorde Opera, and Brasserie Mollard, add charm to Rue Saint-Lazare.
