History of Amfreville-la-Campagne
Founded in 1095, originally known as Ansfredville, this medieval city’s name signifies a “rural area.” Situated on the plain of Neuburg, the city has a rich history, including conflicts with the English in which parts of the town and its church were destroyed in the 15th century. On August 29, 1817, Wilfrid Regnault was sentenced to death for murdering Margaret Heuzé. However, due to a media campaign led by Benjamin Constant, his sentence was reduced to 20 years. In 1821, the town replaced Tourville-la-Campagne as the chief town of the canton. It is located in the Eure department in the Haute-Normandie region.
