History of Ailly-sur-Noye in Picardy
Ailly-sur-Noye is a picturesque French commune nestled in the department of the Somme, within the historically rich region of Picardy. The town is a merger of three former municipalities: Ailly-sur-Noye, Berny-sur-Noye, and Merville-au-Bois. In 1965, Ailly-sur-Noye underwent an administrative amalgamation, absorbing the towns of Berny-sur-Noye and Merville-au-Bois. A significant historical event took place in 1466 when Jean de Luxembourg, the chamberlain of the Duke of Burgundy and bastard of St. Paul, passed away. He was the spouse of Jacqueline Trémoille, and their legacy lives on in the town’s history.

The town is home to the breathtaking Church of St. Martin, a structure that stands as a testament to the town’s rich history. Erected in 1898, this neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic edifice replaced an older building, which was unfortunately torn down due to the ravages of time. Nevertheless, the current church treasures several historical artifacts, including the tomb of John of Luxembourg and his wife Jacqueline of Trémoille. Another notable relic is a triptych carved in bas-relief from the fifteenth century, which was designated as a historical monument in 1862.
Ailly-sur-Noye, with its lush green landscape of plateaus, valleys, plains, and woodlands, is a paradise for nature enthusiasts, fishermen, and hikers alike. The town also hosts the evocative sound and light show titled “the breath of the earth.” This spectacular performance vividly depicts over two millennia of the rich history of Picardy and ancient Gaul.
