History and visit the Museum of Hunting and Nature in Paris
The museum of hunting and nature is on the street Archives of the Isle of France region. The former hotel Guénégaud currently houses the museum. The building construction was made between 1651 and 1655 by the architect François Mansart. The building is classified as a historic monument since 1962. The opening of the museum was made in 1967. It has many works up in 6000 works. These collections affect weapons and hunting accessories, trophies, hunting art, animal art dating from antiquity to the present day. It covers an area of 650 square meters and has around 40,000 visitors each year.
The Museum of Hunting and Nature becomes a private museum since 2003 by presenting collections from the foundation of the house hunting and nature. The creation of this foundation was made on the initiative of industrial family in Ardennes region : François Sommer and his wife Jacqueline. This particular charitable institution was created in 1964. Its purpose was to hunt for while respecting the wilderness to set up a museum dedicated to nature and hunting. The relationship between the Minister of Culture André Malraux and François Sommer led the project of the museum in the old hotel. The building is thus entrusted to the founder of the foundation. The city of Paris who became the owner of the building was leased to the Foundation for a period of 99 years. The restoration and maintenance of the latter were supported by Sommer.
The Museum of Hunting and Nature presents these collections in two different places, including hotel and hotel Guénégaud Mongelas. Collections are the links between the natural environment and people. It is inspired by various cultural and artistic wealth. Description and history of the museum were retained by Georges de Lastic. The museum’s collections are divided into three different themes, including the instruments of hunting, hunting products and the representation of fauna and hunting. The hunting tools are presented from its inception until today. It has a rich collection of the European continent. The weapons and hunting accessories from the collection of George Pauillac and the founders. One can see the evolution of these materials through the guns of Napoleon, Napoleon or Louis XVI. For products of hunting, the museum presents a large number of stuffed animals from Asia, America, Africa and Europe.
The representation of fauna and hunting over the years is through paintings, sculptures, tapestries, ceramics, graphic arts and pieces of furniture. Works of famous painters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Lucas Cranach, Jean Baptiste Oudry are exhibited in the museum. Various exhibitions are held in the museum each year. Works by contemporary artists are presented while enriching the museum’s collections. The museum opens to the public since 6 February 2007 with new fixtures.
