History of Valenciennes
Valenciennes is a town nestled in the French department of Nord and Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. The city was mentioned for the first time in the seventh century. Previously, the town was Frankish and then successively passed under the authority of the houses of Lorraine, Flanders, Bavaria, Burgundy, Austria and Spain. It is in 1677 that it became a permanent French commune. In 1860, Valencia was called the “Athens of the North”.
