History and visit the Rue Notre-Dame-des-Victoires in Paris
The historic Notre-Dame-des-Victoires is nestled in the heart of the IIe arrondissement of Paris. During the seventeenth century, this street was colloquially referred to as the ‘Herbu path’ given its deserted nature. However, come the nineteenth century, it gained significant popularity, chiefly due to the establishment of Imperial couriers, which later transitioned into the renowned New Messaging of The Parisian press. The main office of these couriers was strategically positioned between Reaumur street at No. 111, serving as their primary entrance, and St. Paul-Lelong from 1947 to 1991.
The origins of the street’s name can be traced back to a church associated with a monastery founded in 1619. This ecclesiastical structure was commissioned for Augustin Scalzi, often referred to as the ‘Little Father’. King Louis XII, in gratitude for the triumphs against the Protestants, sanctioned the construction of this church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A major reconstruction took place in 1656, culminating in its completion in 1740. Within its sacred chambers lie the resting places of luminaries like Lulli and Lambert. Interestingly, during the turbulent times of the revolution, this religious institution was repurposed as a local stock exchange. Another noteworthy mention is the convent of the Petits Peres, renowned for its monumental architecture. It boasts an impressive library, an art gallery, and a unique cabinet of medals.
Among the street’s illustrious residents was Samuel Bernard, who had his hotel on Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. A financier by profession, he was closely associated with King Louis XIX, often assisting in financial dealings and loans. Capitalizing on his royal connections, Bernard orchestrated the marriages of his daughters to affluent figures such as Biron, Mole, and Lamoignon. These weddings, celebrated with grandeur, often became the talk of Paris, sometimes even leading to scandals.
