History and activities in Viry-Châtillon
The name of Viry-Châtillon is derived from Latin words ‘virus,’ meaning a place filled with putrid water, reflecting its marshy past, and ‘castellum,’ which translates to a castle or guardhouse. Archaeological evidence shows that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with discoveries of flint tools. During the Gallo-Roman era, a villa was constructed here, serving as an important landmark. The medieval period saw the lords of the land exerting significant control, while peasants cultivated the land for their lords and the religious institutions. Primarily, the area focused on viticulture, grain farming, and timber production. Around 1790, the city was officially formed by merging two districts, namely Viry-sur-Orge and Châtillon-sur-Seine. The twentieth century saw a rapid expansion due to the arrival of the railroad and the establishment of industrial zones.
