Rue Jean Mermoz, situated in the 8th arrondissement of Paris within the districts of Europe and the Madeleine, has a rich and fascinating history. Established in 1795, it was developed on the expansive land of the Colosseum. One of its notable residents was Léon Gambetta, a French lawyer and politician, who resided at No. 12.
In the waning years of the 18th century, the land that was previously the luxurious pleasure facility known as the Colosseum was divided into 10 separate lots and sold as national property. Rue Jean Mermoz was created on one of these lots and was originally named “Mountain Street.” It wasn’t until 1937 that it was renamed in honor of the illustrious aviator Jean Mermoz, known for pioneering airmail routes.
The street stretches from the roundabout of the Champs-Elysées-Marcel-Dassault to the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and spans 306 meters. Its initial width was determined to be 14.40 meters according to a ministerial decree in July 1804. This was later revised to 10.80 meters through another ministerial decision.
While the street may not boast an abundance of historic buildings, it has certainly been frequented by significant figures in French history. Emile Marcere, a notable politician, once lived in a building at No. 25. Furthermore, No. 6 housed a bar run by the clown Footit in the 1920s.
