History of the town of Saint-Omer
Saint-Omer, a joint French department of Pas-de-Calais and Nord-Pas-de-Calais is a city of art and history. It was during the seventh century that the town appears in the scriptures for the first time. At that time, it was known under the name Sithiu. The city owes its name to Audomarus Omer, founder of the Church of St. Bertin. It was around this church that the city was built. In 932, the town was under the possession of the Counts of Flanders.
