History and visit the Quai de Conti
Situated on the left bank of the Seine, the Quai de Conti is part of the 6th arrondissement of Paris. It extends from Rue Dauphine and Pont-Neuf to the Malaquais pier and the Institut de France, measuring 228 meters in length and 22 meters in width. Two ministerial decrees, dated February 13, 1810, and July 7, 1817, established the quay’s alignment. Historically, this dock was initially named Nesle Dock due to the Hotel de Nesle that once occupied its length. In the 17th century, it was renamed Guénégaud. Its present name derives from a hotel called Conti, whose main entry is on this quay. A decree dated April 27, 1814, finalized the name Quai de Conti. This quay has links to notable individuals; notably, the house at the corner of Rue de Nevers was Napoleon Bonaparte’s temporary residence. In a garret lit by a roof window, Napoleon, then a cadet at the military academy, meditated and focused on his studies in 1785. Now a popular destination, the Quai de Conti features other historic buildings. At No. 11 is the Mint, housing La Monnaie de Paris, an institution responsible for the Paris Mint museum. At No. 13 was the Mayor Nyon Bookstore in 1824. At No. 23, the former Collège des Quatre-Nations is now home to the Institut de France.
