Arcole Street connects to the Arcole Bridge in front of Notre Dame through the Ile de la Cite. It is a major route that was built in the early nineteenth century, previously named Rue Saint-Landry and Rue Saint-Pierre-aux-oxen. The former street was named after the relics of St. Landry that were transported to the Church of St. Landry during the Viking invasion. The street was home to the remains of the Boucherat family, Pierre Broussel, and his wife, Girardon. A remarkable monument was erected for Girardon’s burial. In 1790, human bones believed to be the relics of Bishop of Paris Saint-Landry and remnants of a battle were discovered in the foundations of the Rue Saint-Landry church. Ruins of a triumphal monument dating back to the Franks’ era were also found in the city wall. An old butcher’s market gave its name to both the street and the church, which was relocated to the vicinity of Châtelet in the twelfth century. Rue Saint-Pierre-aux-Steers was home to a church as old as the Church of St. Landry. Only the demolished portal of the church can now be seen at the Church of Saint-Severin.
