History of the City of Aubevoye in Normandy
In the year 1051, the town was given the Latin name “Alba via,” later becoming Aubevoye. According to a linguistic study of the Middle Ages, Aubevoye is derived from the French word for dawn (“aube”), symbolizing whiteness, and “voye,” meaning way. Thus, the name implies “white road,” which was the name of an old track. In 990, Aubevoye came under the sovereignty of Evreux for the benefit of Robert, son of the Duke of Normandy. During the conquest of Normandy by Philip Augustus, the owner of Aubevoye castle retained a portion of his land, but had to give up a part that belonged to Lambert Cadoc.
