The Rich History and Legacy of the Hotel de Bourgogne in Paris
Situated in the heart of the 2nd arrondissement of Paris on rue Etienne Marcel, the Hotel de Bourgogne was more than just a hotel. This historic structure served as the primary residence for the Dukes of Burgundy in Paris until the 16th century. Additionally, it was a prestigious hub for theatrical performances in the city from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The only remaining part of this magnificent building is the Tower of John the Fearless.
Construction of the Hotel de Bourgogne was completed in 1548. The structure was meticulously crafted right in the middle of the city by the Brothers of the Passion. These brothers were among the passionate advocates of stage performances and giants of the theatre world during their time. The entrance to the auditorium was located on the Mauconseil street, now known as rue Etienne Marcel.
Parliament’s decision to prohibit the representation of religious plays forced the troupe of the Hotel de Bourgogne to lease the theater to other troupes, such as the Brotherhood of Fools and Children Without Worry.
In 1629, a troupe of actors led by the influential actor Guillaume Gros took up residence in the hotel. They brought a mix of humor and gravitas, presenting both light-hearted plays and more serious ones. By 1647, they had begun staging tragedy shows under the leadership of esteemed actors Floridor and Pierre Corneille. Their performances of tragic plays reached a peak in 1658.
A fusion between the comedians of the Hotel de Bourgogne and the actors of Molière and Marais took place in 1680, marking a significant event in French theatre history. The theatre later became a residence for Italian actors before they were expelled by King Louis XIV in 1697.
