History and Activities in Saint-Gratien
The name of the city originates from its patron saint. The city has been inhabited since prehistoric times, a fact attested to by the large fish pond fed by springs and brooks. The city’s main activities centered around agriculture and vine cultivation. Known as Picolo, the local wines were highly reputed. In the ninth century, the first chapel was erected in the heart of the city. During the Middle Ages, the city suffered numerous instances of destruction. However, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the city, transforming into a suburb of Paris, witnessed urban development.
