Description of the Château de la Grange – Bleneau
The Château de la Grange-Bleneau, dating back to the fourteenth century, is situated in the commune of Courpalay in Seine-et-Marne. Recognized mainly as a fortified house, it has been registered as a historical monument since 1942. Despite its rich history, the castle is not open to public visits. According to documents from 1363, the castle’s layout measures 35/24m and features five towers. The complex includes the castle itself, a farm, a gardener’s house, and a gamekeeper’s lodge. The Castle and farm are from the thirteenth century, while the other buildings are from the eighteenth century. Besides its five towers, the castle boasts an entrance guarded by two turrets and had a drawbridge over the moat and a chapel. Currently a private property owned by the Foundation – Josée and René de Chambrun, it remains a notable historical monument, albeit not accessible to the public.
History of the Château de la Grange – Bleneau
Initially, the castle was recognized as a lordship directly under the king’s jurisdiction in Melun. Named after its first owner, Ancel de la Grange, it later became a strategic asset during the troubled times of Louis XVIII’s minority, with the Prince de Conde taking control. From 1802 to 1834, it was the residence of General Lafayette following the death of his wife, Adriennes de Noailles. On April 15, 1942, both the castle and farm were designated as French historical monuments. In 1955, Lafayette’s descendants sold the Castle to René de Cham Pineton. To this day, the estate remains privately owned and is not open for public visitation, yet it continues to be an integral part of French historical heritage.
